A deep story about war, history repeating itself and the power to 'break the cycle'.

The Background

Narball was created by two Year 2 students over two weeks during a daily half an hour session.

The Creative Process

'the students seamlessly bounced ideas off each other'

Initially, I invited two students to explore the picture book writing process. They started off by drawing things that they would like to see in their own story. We then transferred the ideas into a narrative arc (mountain) and expanded on characters, settings, problems and the resolution in the story.

Together, we created an overview of the picture book using a 15 spread storyboard.

This was an amazing process to facilitate because the students seamlessly bounced ideas off each other whilst I documented their final decisions.

The storyboard was then used by the students to further expand on the content and write the story.

They chose their colour scheme for the illustrations and got to work painting the backgrounds and using coloured markers to draw the objects.

I typed and printed the spread text and the students decided on the placement.

Once the final copies were ready, they were scanned, adjusted and uploaded to Littlescribe! online publishing.

The published books were then presented to the students. Each student received two copies each and two copies were given to the school library to add to their collection of picture books.

Here is a sample of this epic inter-generational battle.
